“Sherlock Holmes” actor Benedict Cumberbatch and his co-star Lara Pulver have been nominated in the 2012 Critics Choice TV Awards for their roles in BBC One’s modern take on Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle’s classic sleuth.

The BBC reported Wednesday that Cumberbatch will be battling Idris Elba for his role in “Luther.” Elba also stars in the Sci-Fi thriller “Prometheus,” directed by Ridley Scott. Dominic West, Bill Nighy and Kevin Costner round out the other Best Actor nominees.

In the actress category Pulver faces Gillian Anderson of “X-Files” fame for her role in the acclaimed adaptation of “Great Expectations.” The other actress nominees are Jessica Lang (“American Horror Story”), Patricia Clarkson (Lifetime drama “Five”) and Julianne Moore (HBO’s Sarah Palin biopic “Game Change.”)

Cumberbatch has been receiving praise from the filmmakers of “Star Trek 2” (an unofficial title), especially from the film’s producer Damon Lindelof
