During the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo (April 27-29), actor Michael Rooker — who plays the infamous Merle Dixon on AMC’s The Walking Dead — confirmed that he will be back for a third season and that he may have more than just a stump after losing a hand in season one.

Michael Rooker’s last appearance on the Walking Dead TV series was during a hallucination sequence early in season two where his on-screen brother Daryl (Norman Reedus) envisioned Merle delivering some prep talk in the woods. After joking with the audience during his panel about possibly strapping a bazooka or some ridiculous weapon to his arm in place of his missing hand, he did get serious by hinting that his character is likely to utilize something in place of a hand simply because of his resourcefulness.

“Thinking of how Merle is written and how I’ve played him so far I find it hard to believe that Merle would walk around with just a stump. Whatever happens…. You’re gonna be surprised.”

He went on to say that he ended up buying all of the graphic novels before he was officially cast and said that even if he didn’t end up getting the part that he’d continue to read them. “I really loved them I couldn’t put them down.”
