Hobbit news: Elijah Woods, Andy Serkis on Smaug and Evangelline Lilly on playing an elf

Over the last week or so, the cast of Peter Jackson’s “Hobbit” have been dropping insight, excitement and tidbits about the “The Lord of the Rings” prequel.

Evangeline Lilly revealed it isn’t natural playing an elf.

“I can’t just be spontaneous, because there is nothing natural about being an elf,” Lilly said. “It’s not human, so I have to study to learn what it means to be this other creature.”

“So, on top of my stunt training — which I need to learn how to be proficient with the bow and arrow, and with daggers, and in fighting orcs that are, you know, ten feet tall — I also have to learn the language of Elvish, and I have to learn an RP [Received Pronunciation] neutral English accent for when I speak English.” When you add in learning to move and gesture like an elf, Lilly figures she has spent “four times as much time preparing as I do actually shooting.”

Ellijah Woods is anxious to see the new film after completed the shooting of his scenes for The Hobbit in New Zealand.

“What’s great is that, especially because my character is so small in this, I can be completely objective. So, I’m excited to see it, as a fan.

“I don’t have the months and months of months of hard work and experience on the films, and deep knowledge as to what they’re filming, on a day-to-day basis.

“I have my own little bit, and then everything is going to be a surprise.”

Wood chatted with Collider.com about the upcoming movies, saying: “It was a gift to go back and return. I was in Hobbiton again, for the first time in 11 years. I turned 19 in Hobbiton. I’m 30 now.

“That put a lot of things into perspective. It was beautiful. It was just beautiful to go back.

“I only worked a small amount when I was there. I was there for a month, and the majority of my time was just going to set every day and meeting a lot of the new cast members, catching up with old friends, and being in Wellington again.”

Andy Serkis says that the design process of Smaug is a safely guarded secret.

Benedict Cumberbatch is set to voice the character of Smaug in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit and Serkis believes that it’s going to be ‘extraordinary’.

Speaking to MTV the actor said: “I can’t give any secrets away, none of those trade secrets. I can’t say that because actually it’s still under wraps.

“It’s still a very secret character that is very closely safeguarded, and it’s still in the design process.

“With an actor like Benedict Cumberbatch playing him, it will be extraordinary.”

Serkis will be back as Gollum for the two movies and he is also to direct the second unit.

The British actor is currently filming The Hobbit down in New Zealand alongside Martin Freeman, Ian McKellan and Richard Armitage.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is released December 14th.
