New York Christians march against church ban

New York Christians aren‘t happy about New York City’s ban on churches meeting in public schools.

On Sunday, hundreds of religious leaders, politicians and individuals who stand firmly opposed to the now-infamous church crackdown joined together to march across the Brooklyn Bridge.

If the regulation isn’t overturned, at least 60 churches will be homeless as of next month.

Pastor Dimas Salaberrios, who was arrested and whose church has been fighting to keep its space at the Bronx River Community Center, claims that there’s a sinister plan in the works.

“New York City Law Department is working on getting rid of churches from community centers. Now they’re targeting us,” he told the Christian post.

CBS:

An estimated 17,000 worshipers marched across the Brooklyn Bridge to City Hall Sunday to protest the Appeals Court decision to ban religious services from public schools to avoid the appearance of government endorsement of particular faiths.

“Freedom to worship, that’s what we want,” they chanted.

On December 5, the City announced congregations would have to stop using public schools for services as of February 12.

“We are here to tell Mayor Bloomberg, I mean we are going to have 60 churches homeless and that’s not Christ-like,” said Bronx Pastor Sal Sabino of the Heavenly Region Christian Center.

“The church has been notoriously persecuted since its inception so I’m not surprised but we’re not going to stay quiet we’re going to speak out and say this is what the foundation of America is built upon,” said Roseann Kytka of Ascencion Presbyterian Church

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is defending his city’s ban on worship services in public schools, saying the U.S. Constitution clearly calls for separation of church and state.

“I’ve always thought that one of the great things about America is that we keep a separation between church and state,” the mayor said at a press conference on Monday.

“And the more clear that separation is, the more those people who want to be able to practice their religion will have the opportunity to do so,” he said.
