“Super” movie review

By: Mike Gencarelli

I have always been a fan of Troma movies. James Gunn is able to bring that Troma feel for movies into the mainstream. This is probably because he started his career with Troma in fact. “Super” is the exact same way, it is beyond over the top and way out of town. The film is similar to the story in “Kick-Ass” but only really in the fact of the whole regular joe creating a super hero. In this film only parts of the movie is really kick ass, otherwise it drags and lacks any major laughs.

The story is about a guy named Frank (Rainn Wilson) who loses his recovering addict wife (Liv Tyler) to a druglord/pimp (Kevin Bacon). Frank creates a superhero called Crimson Bolt and starts attacking the crime on the street with a wrench. His main aim is getting back his wife and getting revenge. This film has everything one would want for an over-the-top movie blood, gore, drugs, sex and a lot of violence but it is just not executed properly. I feel like it misses the funny marks and is a little dry when the blood is not splattering.

I have never been a fan of “The Office” or of Rainn Wilson. There is something about the characters he plays that really shows zero range for me that has no appeal. Ellen Page in the film is funny but also a little annoying and creepy. I would have to say the funniest and best part of the film is one of my favorites, Nathan Fillion. Unfortunately he is only a minor character and does not have more than two or three scenes.
