J.R. Burningham, Utah native, wins $1 million for ‘Pug Attack’ Doritos commercial

SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake City native won $1 million Sunday after a commercial he directed topped the USA Today Super Bowl Ad Meter.

The winning “Pug Attack” Doritos ad that aired at the beginning of the Super Bowl was created by J.R. Burningham, who graduated from Alta High School and attended the University of Utah, The Deseret News reported.

The commercial shows a man mocking a dog with a bag of Doritos through a glass door. The pug then knocks down the door and eats the chips.

The ad was one of thousands entered in the Doritos Crash the Super Bowl ad contest. The finalists were judged by a panel of viewers who rated the commercials as they watched them.

Burningham’s mother, Kati Burningham, said she was “elated beyond belief” that the viewers picked her son’s ad as their favorite.

“J.R. and Tess had been working at this and sacrificing, and mortgaged themselves to the hilt with student loans, and didn’t take jobs because they’ve just been pursuing these dreams of producing and writing and directing movies that they have created,” she told the newspaper.
