Tyler Clementi, 18, who was studying at Rutgers University in New Jersey, USA, jumped from the George Washington Bridge.
He posted a final message on the social networking website Facebook, which read: “Jumping off the gw bridge sorry.”
Paul Mainardi, a lawyer for his family said: “Tyler was a fine young man and a distinguished musician. The family is heartbroken beyond words.”
His driver’s licence and university identification card were found in a wallet left on the bridge on Sep 22 after two witnesses saw someone jump.
His body has not been recovered.
Fellow students Dharun Ravi, who was Clementi’s room-mate, and Molly Wei, have been charged with invasion of privacy and could face up to five years in prison if convicted.
They are accused of placing a camera in the room and streaming the images straight on to the internet.
In a message posted on microblogging website Twitter on Sep 19 Ravi allegedly said: “Roommate asked for the room till midnight. I went into molly’s room and turned on my webcam. I saw him making out with a dude. Yay.”
Steven Goldstein, chairman of the gay rights group Garden State Equality, said his group considers Clementi’s death a hate crime.
He said: “We are heartbroken over the tragic loss of a young man who, by all accounts, was brilliant, talented and kind.
“And we are sickened that anyone in our society, such as the students allegedly responsible for making the surreptitious video, might consider destroying others’ lives as a sport.”

@Fabiola why did you put angry face at the end???
Another tragic story about when Bullying goes high tech. Im sickened that this poor guys privacy was invaded to the point that he was publicly humiliated and chose to end his life rather than live with the humiliation.
My heart and prayers go out to the family. You send your kids away to college hoping that the people they encounter in the world will be kind.
WOW, GOD BLESS HIS SOUL.That is so sad that he killed himself over humiliation. If i was gay and my so called “FRIEND” did that to me i would have dealt with it, and to the jerks who did this shame on u guys
that was so stupid of him to kill himself because of thatand so HURTFUL for his so called FRIENDS to do that
that is so sad and so mean for his so called FRIENDS to do that
Thank you..really informative!!
@anonymous- I certainly am not that naive about the porn industry. My point was that the previous poster seemed to be fixated on that aspect when this case truly does not have anything to do with gay porn and the luring in of innocent straight guys. It has to do with a crime committed that resulted in a terrible tragedy.
As a lesbian I grieve at the losses that have struck our community in the past few weeks. @nameless said Tyler was being dramatic and no one had to know about his closeted life. How about if we imagine a world where it’s OK to be gay and no one has to be closeted or fearful or worry about getting beat up for who they are. There would have never been a tape if Tyler was straight- plain and simple.
@ Jean I know a lot of straight men and gay men. If it one thing that I know it’s this…… the only time a so called straight man gay bashes, beats up, or kills a gay man, it’s because he has done something with that gay man and don’t want his business outted! Which is equally as dramatic as this young man killing himself because he was outted.
I’m slightly shocked at the stupidity of Nameless and Jean. First of all there are PLENTY of straight men who do gay acts for money, its a huge porn industry called gay for pay, do a little reading.
Second of all its real easy to say that this kid was being overly dramatic when your life has not been turned inside out and released permanently on the internet. I have a number of friends who came out of the closet and its an incredibly emotional, personal, private and difficult thing to do, it should ALWAYS and ONLY be done when that individual is ready to do so. Too bad your first fumbling embarrassing sex act wasnt caught on tape so we could all watch you and laugh every time we google your name. If you think this is a natural part of college you are as sick as the ones who filmed him. You have no idea how his family would have reacted to this so to say he was dramatic is so insensitve. Once its on the internet its there forever, the rest of his life he would come across people and wonder had they seen it, or be confronted about the video. It doesnt just fade away. Not to mention college is hard enough with the pressures of self discovery and the evolution of who are you becoming, add to that something this traumatic, humiliating and wide spread and how dare you belittle his experience. Of course I’m not saying he should have killed himself, its an absolute tragedy that he felt he had no other way out, i can completely understand the desperation and loss, I think the problem is there are not enough outlets for people feeling this kind of pain to use to overcome the shock of it. These little bastards who filmed him and released it should be charged with ALOT more than invasion of privacy, There should be felony charges so that they can have this haunt them forever, like that video will haunt this kid’s family. They should be expelled from school completely and have their own lives turned upside down so we can all point and laugh at their misfortune and pain like they wanted to do to this kid. This is just another form of bullying which is out of control in this country and clearly requires harsher penalities for those involved so we can stop having our weaker children take their own lives from the torture of it. my heart goes out to this kid’s family, to all the kids in school being abused by their peers every day who feel they have nowhere to turn and no way out and to everyone who has been humiliated by the freedom of the internet. Ignorant souless pigs are constantly invading people’s privacy with the web and they should be severly punished to discourage this type of bullshit in the future.
While it is sad what has transpired I do believe the young man was a tad bit DRAMATIC. I mean, yeah, so you got a bit embarrassed, but life goes on. Killing yourself is never the answer. You wanted privacy and now the whole world knows of your public life. Every action has an equal reaction. If he hadn’t killed himself, the world wouldn’t known of his closet life, only those in direct contact with him and this whole “gay internet streaming” would’ve faded. That’s just how scandal is. Welcome to college life my boy!!!!
@Francisco- yea right. Do you really know of any straight young guys who would do gay acts for money? Once again, it’s the evil homosexuals using their agenda to reel in the young and vulnerable. Straight guys beat up and kill gay guys- they don’t blow them for money.
I am not sure if many people that are not in the know have any ideahow big a deal this is. For instance their is a website known as gaytube.com, and its a “youtube” of sorts for gay men, the videos are of porn, and in many instances their are amatuer film. But Gaytube.com is in fact perpetuating a dangerous problem by offering cash incentives to young college guys that are not and have never made out to be gay, turn around and agree to perform gay acts, in the hopes of getting money. I think this really has to be looked at. Seriously before more harm is done in the name of entertainment.
