“Resident Evil: Afterlife” film review by Movie Mikes

By: Mike Gencarelli

What should you expect from the fourth sequel based on a video adaption? From the trailer it seemed pretty cool. I have been fan of series since the first, even with action taking over the horror aspects in the sequels. Since I am a fan of 3D, I figured 3D + zombies horror should be an instant win. Not so much.

The film picks up right after the events in “Extinction” with the chopper full of survivors heading to Alaska. Alice stood back to pursue her for what seems like forever grudge against the Umbrella corporation. Unfortunately after the opening scene which is pretty cool, they take away her kick ass powers and she becomes plain Alice again. This was a bad way to start the film. Alice meets up with a new group of people in hopes to find a safe zone, Arcadia. But of course, plans do not work out and everything goes to hell.

Milla Jovovich definitely has the action hero down and does it well. Though I found myself not really interested in the story from the beginning and even flat out bored at points. The rest of the cast is forgettable and not interesting at all. Ali Larter returns as Claire but doesn’t add anything to the film. Her character was better written in “Extinction”.

The fact that it was ‘shot in 3D’ seemed like a plus but the effect didn’t feel fully utilized and almost wasted. They show all cool scenes in trailer and leave nothing cool for the movie. The movie just didn’t seem to go anywhere and doesn’t add much to the series besides of course setting it up for yet another sequel.
