The Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer team deliver once again. “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” is not the summer’s best film but it is filled with action, comedy, and some great special effects. It’s crazy to think that this film is actually based off a scene from 1940′s “Fantasia” starring Mickey Mouse, which was such a classic story. The film takes that one scene and transforms it pretty well onto the big screen.

The story focuses with Dave (Jay Baruchel), a normal guy from New York City who meets sorcerer Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage) and gets recruited to help fight his arch-nemesis, Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina). Of course love interests are involved and complicate the matter. Nicholas Cage really gives a great performance in this film and has the best lines. His character has a great story and it is tangled with action and romance. Jay Baruchel is Jay Baruchel. He still plays the nerdy guy that is confused and though somehow gets the girl, nothing special. Alfred Molina is great as the wise cracking sly villain sorcerer.

The special effects in the film are really great and this film is one of the only action films this summer not in 3D, though it has the best potential. The action scenes could really have benefited from the 3D effects. The comedy in the film is sharp and the script is well written. I doubt this will be the next “Pirates of the Caribbean” series for both Disney and Bruckheimer but it is damn entertaining and should help bring the summer out of the slum…at least until “Inception” comes out.
