GOP Senator uses racial slur against female gubernatorial candidate

GOP state senator Jake Knotts went below the belt when he used racial slurs against South Carolina GOP gubernatiorial candidate Nikki Haley. Knotts was on an internet radio show called “Pub Politics” when he made the hateful comments.
“We already got one raghead in the White House,” Knotts said. “We don’t need another in the Governor’s Mansion.”
Haley’s parents immigrated from India and she practices Sikh religion as well as Methodism. According to the State newspaper, candidate Haley admits that she attends services in both religions. Her religious preference is an important matter in South Carolina, especially when 92% of residents are of Christian faith, according to Wikipedia.
The two have been adversaries for a very long time according to the State newspaper, and Haley is a supporter of current governor Mark Sanford while Knotts has backed Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer.
In response to the comments, Karen FLoyd, the S.C. GOP chairwoman had asked for an apology from Senator Knotts, of which he complied by making this statement,
“My ‘raghead’ comments about Obama and Haley were intended in jest,” Knotts said in a statement. “Bear in mind that this is a freewheeling, anything-goes Internet radio show that is broadcast from a pub. It’s like local political version of ‘Saturday Night Live.’
“Since my intended humorous context was lost in translation, I apologize. I still believe Ms. Haley is pretending to be someone she is not, much as Obama did, but I apologize to both for an unintended slur.”
